This 2018 Man Song Mother Line (曼松母本) 357g sheng pu-er cake originates from the revered Man Song Tea King Tree territory in Yunnan—an area long celebrated for producing tribute-level teas of exceptional refinement.

“Mother Line” (母本) refers to material taken directly from the original, foundational trees—genetic anchors of the Man Song lineage. This particular release is officially registered and linked to tree number 001, harvested within the core Tea King Tree ground (曼松茶王地). The base manager’s signature accompanies the lot, affirming its provenance and authenticity. The source tree is estimated to be approximately 1,000 years old, standing as a living bridge between cultivated tea tradition and ancient forest vitality.

The picking standard follows a classical high-grade ratio:

  • 70% one bud, two leaves (一芽二叶)
  • 30% one bud, three leaves (一芽三叶)

This balance creates both aromatic precision and structural depth—capturing the tenderness of early spring growth while preserving the layered strength needed for aging.

Terroir & Lineage

Man Song is historically associated with tribute teas once favored by imperial courts. The region’s red soils, mineral density, high elevation mists, and steady subtropical climate create a profile known for elegance over aggression—sweetness over sharpness, finesse over force.

Unlike many bold Bulang-style shengs, Man Song teas are celebrated for their refined qi, penetrating sweetness, and graceful aftertaste that lingers along the throat (喉韵) with a clear, rising energy.

Being sourced from the Tea King Tree zone elevates this cake further: it embodies the genetic and ecological core of Man Song’s identity.

In the Cup

The liquor presents luminous gold with remarkable clarity. Aromatically, expect:

  • Orchid and light honeyed florals
  • Soft stone fruit brightness
  • A clean, sugarcane-like sweetness
  • Fine mineral texture

The mouthfeel is silky and cohesive, with a sweetness that gathers rather than spikes. Bitterness is restrained and transforms quickly into returning sweetness (回甘). The qi is subtle but steady—uplifting without agitation, expansive without heaviness.

As it continues to rest and mature, this 2018 pressing is entering a compelling transitional stage—retaining youthful fragrance while beginning to develop deeper resonance and rounded body.

Aging & Storage

Naturally aged under clean, dry storage conditions since 2018, this tea is well-positioned for long-term evolution. Its mother-tree material and balanced picking standard suggest excellent aging potential, gradually deepening in sweetness, body, and energetic presence over decades.

Ideal for:

  • Focused gongfu sessions
  • Comparative tastings
  • Ceremonial contemplation
  • Collectors seeking authentic Man Song lineage material

Traditional Perspectives

Traditionally, sheng pu-er is believed to support digestion, promote healthy qi circulation, and assist in clearing internal stagnation as it matures with time. Studies have also suggested that it may assist in regulating blood sugar and fat levels, reducing bodily toxins, and supporting weight management.*

BREWING SUGGESTION (this is just a guide; we encourage you to experiment and find a way that works for you!):

Western Style

  1. Break off ~2–3g of tea and drop it into a large teapot or thermos enough for 3-4 people (~30-35 oz total)
  2. Add 200°F water and steep for 3-10 min or until it reaches the desired strength

Grandpa Style

  1. Break off ~3–4g of tea and drop it into a tea mug or glass (~8-12 oz)
  2. Add 200°F water and steep for ~1-2 min or until it reaches the desired strength
  3. Start sipping the tea until there is about one-third of liquid left in the cup, then fill it up with hot water again and repeat step #2, adjusting the steeping time as you see fit (repeat this until the tea loses its flavor)

Gongfu Cha Style

  1. Break off ~4–5g of tea and add it into a gaiwan or yixing clay teapot
  2. Give the tea a quick rinse with 200-212°F water
  3. Add 200-212°F water and steep for ~30-sec or until it reaches the desired strength for the first infusion
  4. For the second to sixth infusions, add 200-212°F water and steep for ~5-10-sec
  5. For subsequent infusions, increase the steeping time each time by ~10-sec until the tea loses its flavor
